Research in the Birchler laboratory is focused in three areas: 1) dosage effects and polyploidy; 2) molecular basis of heterosis; 3) understanding chromosome structure. Dr. Birchler is a coPI on an NSF funded project to study maize centromeres, coPI of an NSF funded project studying plant polyploidy, and PI of an NSF funded project on somatic karyotyping in maize.
